World Breastfeeding Week :1st-7th August – What is it all about?

The World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is the greatest outreach vehicle for the breastfeeding movement, being celebrated in over 120 countries. Officially it is celebrated from 1-7 August. However, groups may choose other dates to make it a more successful event in their countries.

Sharing your wonderful work will show linkage and solidarity with the global WBW campaign. Send your reports, materials you have produced, photos and we will create a webpage for you which you can use to further promote your WBW activities to

Breastfeeding: A Vital Emergency Response
Are you ready?

  • To draw attention to the vital role that breastfeeding plays in emergencies worldwide.
  • To stress the need for active protection and support of breastfeeding before and during emergencies.
  • To inform mothers, breastfeeding advocates, communities, health professionals, governments, aid agencies, donors, and the media on how they can actively support breastfeeding before and during an emergency.
  • To mobilise action and nurture networking and collaboration between those with breastfeeding skills and those involved in emergency response.

  • Children are the most vulnerable in emergencies – child mortality can soar from 2 to 70 times higher than average due to diarrhoea, respiratory illness and malnutrition.
  • Breastfeeding is a life saving intervention and protection is greatest for the youngest infants. Even in non-emergency settings, non-breastfed babies under 2 months of age are six times more likely to die.
  • Emergencies can happen anywhere in the world. Emergencies destroy what is ‘normal,’ leaving caregivers struggling to cope and infants vulnerable to disease and death.
  • During emergencies, mothers need active support to continue or re-establish breastfeeding.
  • Emergency preparedness is vital. Supporting breastfeeding in non-emergency settings will strengthen mothers’ capacity to cope in an emergency.

Behind the curtains….

Previous WBW Themes

The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) was formed in 1991 to act on the Innocenti Declaration (1990) to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. As part of its action plan to facilitate and strengthen social mobilisation for breastfeeding, WABA envisioned a global unifying breastfeeding promotion strategy. A day dedicated to breastfeeding was suggested to be marked in the calendar of international events. The idea of a day’s celebration was later turned into a week.

This has become to be known as World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) celebrated every 1-7 August to commemorate the Innocenti Declaration. World Breastfeeding Week was first celebrated in 1992. Now it involves over 120 countries and is endorsed by UNICEF, WHO and FAO.

Overall coordination of World Breastfeeding Week is done at the WABA Secretariat in Penang, Malaysia, which includes the selection of the theme and slogan, identifying resource persons for a specific theme and the preparation and dissemination of World Breastfeeding Week materials such as the calendar announcement, posters, action folders and banners. These advocacy materials serve to stimulate action among local groups, governments, UN and other agencies and other issue organisations for their own World Breastfeeding Week activities in their area/country.

Hanafi’s Breastfeeding Journey

Mother’s Name : Hanizawati Jamaludin a.k.a Hanz 😛 .
(don’t any Chit-chatters dare to call me other name than Hanz, yah!Wah, me sounds so garang, he,he…)

Child’s Name : Hanafi bin Hasrat

Child’s D.O.B :
18th February, 2004

Photo Location : Blessedmum Nursing Wear Advertisement-Photo Shoot, Sunway Resort, KL (November 2004).

The uniqueness of this photo was that I was breastfeeding lil Hanafi at that time despite it was my turn for photo shoot. My task was to model 3 pieces of Nursing Wear and tenderly remembered, about the moment I was supposed to get ready to start posing around & that moment Hanafi had chosen claiming his ‘fix’. I was anxious & unable to decide & it was coaxing & gentle assurance from Angeline of Blessedmum to just let it out naturally. Akward at first because it was truly my ever first experience having the limelight focussing on me & was worried simultaneously whether I have appeared discreetly or not. There was many people inside the tiny hotel room especially another two Nursing Moms models, Makeup Artist & hubbies hovering. I was blushing but I guess Professional Photographer were very good in their job and was able to capture the moment plus managed concealing akward me.

So the photo become like this advertisement appeared in several Parenting Magazine like Pa & Ma, Mother & Baby and so forth…

Breastfeed Hanafi’s Sweet Memory : At first, I managed to exclusive breastfeed for 3 months since the day of his borned but because of my ignorances and lack of support, I started to mix-feeding though I pumped diligently at work. It turned out that my mistake was that I should use be
tter pump, corrected myself on the proper way of hand expressing, nutrition, and many, many more.

My turning point was after reading two stories that appeared in MyMomsBest Forum about how they travelled extensively & frequent separation from their child did not dampen their spirit to keep on going breastfeed exclusively. I was ashamed of myself so determination took over, loaded myself with information & seeked assistance from Lactation Consultant cum Paeditrician. After three months of mixed feeding, exactly when Hanafi turned 7 months old, I managed to UPGRADE from MIXED FEEDING to FULLY BREASTFEED for 2 and Half years. Never looked back or resort to formula milk since then.

Breastfeed Hanafi’s Bitter Memory : Hanafi was unable to properly latch on and because he was having difficulty prior on his deliverance, the NOT BREASTFEEDING FRIENDLY Hospital fed him formula. Only the next morning, he was nursing to me and the following days I had bad engorged and Hanafi was having fit. I thought I’m going to fail my breastfeeding mission but I kept my head and yes, it was worthy in the end.

To read in detail about my Breastfeeding Journey with Hanafi, I have shared it previously in this Chatterbox of mine. Just click this and that.

Alright, back to the original mission. This chat is supposed to accomplish my entry on the Breastfeeding Contest hosted by Nurul Dhia.

Participant are only allowed to send one photo and one entry but after rechecking with Nurul Dhia, I’m posting one more story. Not easy being hard-core bf Moms of two boys & I need to be fair & square to both of them. Win lose, is part of the parcel but what I wanted to share actually is hope that my breastfeeding journey could be any assistance to other nursing moms or soon to be nursing moms.Better still some inspiration? Ok, now Hambali’s breastfeeding story..

Hambali’s Breastfeeding Journey

Child’s name : Hambali bin Hasrat

Child’s D.O.B. : 12th June, 2008

Photo Location : Waiting Room, Salam Medical Centre, Shah Alam, Selangor (1st week of July, 09)

I descibed this moment as nursing for comfort. The best remedy to ease the pain after IV procedure & from the disease itself is Mama’s Nen Nen. He was crying painfully & it quiten him once he was latching on.

During the hospital stay also, Hambali was under fed, refused to be feed by the Hospital’s Cafe which was the baby porridge that I’ve ordered & no explanation needed for this. He just missed his Mama’s home-cooked porridge. But his Mama was unable to fulfill this as she was accompanying him. So what’s keep him going to survive? Mama’s Precious Drop!

Breastfeed’s Hambali’s Sweet Memory : The first time Hambali tugged on my breast, he does’nt need any coaxing or lesson at all. Ngap! It was like he’s been nursing for weeks & expertly knows how. Both hubby & me was totally surprised because for a first timer, Hambali done a great job in it! We could hear the swallowing and we were overjoyed because my milk (the colostrum too) flowed abundance!

Breastfeed Hambali’s Bitter Memory : Spiteful remark received from family-related on whether my ‘Milk’ has something to ‘do’ with Hambali’s previous Urinary Tract Infection. Alhamdulillah. It was over and at 13 months, Hambali still nursing well!

You can read more about this side of story here.
